why so many 1964 nickles?

i wasn't sure where to put this, so i figured numismatics would be good.

i have been searching change jars recently, (mine, neighbors, mom & dad). one thing i have noticed is the unusually large amount of 1964 nickles. much more from that year than any other year from the 60s. i figure they must have produced more nickles than other coins that year because they were so much cheeper. but why are there hardly any 1960-63? and way less 1965-69. lots of 1970 nickles too.

just wondering.

Re: why so many 1964 nickles?

1963-!964-65 was shortage of small coinage blamed on coin collectors hoarding unc rolls and bags.

The mint went away from Mint marks on coins in 65 66 67 to discourage hoarding, they made plenty of coinage in 64-65.

SPEND THEM.....
